  • Vehicle allegedly used to target informant

A fake Police jeep allegedly used by organised criminals in an attempt to murder an undercover Police informant was taken into custody on Tuesday (8) by the Walana Central Anti Vice Striking Force.

The informant had provided crucial information on 29 November 2025 that led to a major Police operation in the Kirinda coastal area, conducted under the direction of Assistant Superintendent of Police Rohan Olugala. The operation resulted in the seizure of 325 kgs of Ice, the arrest of eight suspects and the impounding of six vehicles. The estimated value of the confiscated drug shipment exceeded Rs 5 billion.

According to reports, overseas-based organised criminals known as Ruban and Angoda Priyankara, who allegedly operated the drug-trafficking ring, subsequently planned to retaliate against the informant over the losses caused by the Police raid.

Their alleged initial plan was to abduct and murder the informant, decapitate him and leave his head in front of ASP Olugala’s residence.

Following the failure of that plot, the criminals allegedly made another attempt to kill the informant by running him over with the fake Police jeep approximately nine months later.

The incident occurred at around 6 a.m. on 5 September 2026, while the informant was travelling towards Kirinda Harbour. He sustained injuries while attempting to evade the vehicle and is currently receiving treatment at a hospital under Police protection.

Acting on intelligence regarding the vehicle that fled the scene, the Striking Force located and recovered the fake Police jeep, which had been concealed inside a garage in the Hewagama area of Kaduwela.

The seized vehicle was subsequently handed over to the Kirinda Police Station for further investigations, which are continuing.
