The ‘Battle of the Golds’ – the annual big match between two leading schools in Mathale, St Thomas' College and Government Science College will be played as a limited overs cricket encounter at the Bernard Aluvihare stadium in Mathale today (15).

According to past records this encounter was first played in 1962 and it had ended in a draw. Ranjith Liyanage had captained St Thomas' while the Government Science College had been led by Ranjith Eramudugolla.

Since then the confrontation between the two schools resulted in Matale Thomians leading the series 19 to one, with the rest being drawn games. The Government Science College registered their solitary win in 1963 as they beat St Thomas ' by a narrow margin under the captaincy of Senarath Siyabalangamuwa.

This year St Thomas' College team will be led by allrounder Sahas Abrew with Thenuka Herath as his deputy, while RMEK Ekanayake will lead the Government Science College team with NGTTN Jayaweera as his vice captain.
