  • 36 motorcyclists nabbed in Matara for reckless driving

A total of 16 motorcycles, including four high-capacity bikes that were assembled by illegally importing spare parts, have been seized by the Bandaragama Police.

The motorcycles were being ridden in a manner that caused inconvenience to the general public, emitting excessive noise, particularly disturbing people who were out partaking in Vesak celebrations and also other vehicles using the roads.

As a result, 16 youths along with the 16 motorcycles have been taken into Police custody.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the registration plates on the four high-capacity motorcycles were suspicious.

Furthermore, Police said that during the inspection, it was observed that the other motorcycles had been modified with non-standard parts after removing the prescribed silencers, producing loud noises.

Police added that the arrested individuals are residents of Boralesgamuwa, Kesbewa, Bandaragama, Dodangoda, Kalutara, Homagama, and Ingiriya.

The youths have been released on bail, and they are scheduled to be produced before court on a future date, the Police noted.

Meanwhile, 36 motorcyclists, who were driving recklessly while causing panic among the public on Vesak Poya Day, have been arrested by the Matara Police on Monday (12). Police also seized 36 motorcycles that violated traffic laws by having forged number plates, modified silencers, and additional modifications installed. During a traffic inspection conducted in the Matara Town by the Matara Headquarters Police, these 36 motorcycles were taken into custody. The motorcyclists in question had installed additional devices and were also riding the motorcycles in violation of numerous motor traffic laws.

Police said that a majority of the arrested motorcyclists were between the ages of 18 and 20, with temporary driving licences. They are residents of Galle, Weligama, Akuressa, and Matara. Police further stated that the motorcycles taken into Police custody will be presented before the Commissioner General of Motor Traffic, inspected, and then produced before court.
