Petition filed over failure to hear challenge to 22nd Amendment Bill

07 Sep 2026 | BY Staff Writer

A fundamental rights petition has been filed before the Supreme Court seeking a declaration that the rights of two petitioners were violated after a challenge to the 22nd Amendment Bill was allegedly not heard.

The petition was filed by Union of National Organizations Convenor Dulara Gunathilake and retired Sri Lanka Air Force officer Shantha Jayathilake.

The petitioners claim that Gunathilake had previously filed a petition challenging the 22nd Amendment Bill, but that it was not taken up for examination in open court.

They have also requested an interim order preventing the Supreme Court’s determination on the Bill from being communicated to the Speaker until the present petition is heard and a final judgment is delivered.
