SL’s coaching certification: Vaas flags shortcuts

29 Aug 2025

Ex-Sri Lanka left-arm fast bowler Chaminda Vaas has voiced serious concerns over the integrity of the country’s cricket coaching system, warning against the indiscriminate awarding of Level 3 coaching certificates.

In a post on X, Vaas, 51, stated that issuing top-tier coaching credentials to “anyone” undermines the sport’s development rather than strengthening it.

“A certificate must represent knowledge, skill, and dedication. Our game deserves quality coaches, not shortcuts,” he wrote.

Vaas, who quit international cricket in 2009 after a 15-year stint claiming 755 wickets in total in both Tests and ODIs, has been actively involved in coaching and player development capacities since his retirement.

His remarks come amidst raging debate over the criteria and oversight in awarding coaching qualifications in Sri Lanka.
