They may be the bad guys, but boy do villains have style. Just because you’re completely evil doesn’t mean you can’t have style. Imagine taking over the world and looking fabulous doing so.
You can wear whatever you want, which is one of the benefits of being bad. Many villains create clothes that reflect their inner wicked divas, from exquisite couture to outlandish fake eyelashes, as a way of expressing their liberation from wholesome heroics.
Across all genres, these are some of the most stylish villains.
Cruella de Vil
A list of most stylish villains with no mention of Cruella would be a crime. Cruella de Vil, whether represented by the magnificent Glenn Close or embodied in a punker version by Emma Stone, is distinguished by her eye-catching clothes. Her dramatic designer looks utilise plenty of black and white, animal print, and of course, fur.
Sure, she might not be the most ethical, environment-friendly fashionista, but no one can deny that her signature black and white looks paired with a red lip is iconic.
Maleficent
The MVP of fairytale queens especially in terms of evil couture, Maleficent is a great example of fashionable villains with her signature black looks, particularly in the live-action adaptation starring the stunning Angelina Jolie.
An aspect of her persona that sets her apart is her attire. Her signature black distinguishes her from the other fairies and her horned headpiece and flame-like purple sleeve lining have connections with the underworld. Unlike the cartoon version, though, Jolie appears in a number of various gowns, each more exquisite than the last and embellished, depending on the event, with hints of gold or lace.
Loki
No doubt one of the most beloved antagonists, Loki stole the hearts of many fans despite his overarching plan to rule the world. The trickster god typically wears a pair of curved goat horns and is dressed in green, gold, and black.
Costume designer Charlie Wen drew inspiration from the Marvel comics when putting together Loki’s outfits, but gave it a more futuristic twist. Since Loki is more of a schemer than a fighter, Wen designed his armour to be “more overtly ceremonial than practical” – and what’s a supervillain without his cape?
Regina George
Designated mean girl Regina George is a staple bad girl with a great sense of style. The Plastics, who were written as a parody of the American high school experience, show off early 2000s and Y2K fashion with Juicy Couture sweatsuits, low-waisted bottoms, and graphic tank tops.
Of course, no Regina George fashion roundup would be complete without the iconic “On Wednesdays, we wear pink!” look from the original ‘Mean Girls’.
Heather Chandler
Before Regina George laid down the fashion rules for the Plastics, another queen bee ruled the movie fashion hall of fame. ‘Heathers’ (1988) introduced these ’80s icons and their looks would later be replicated in the popular musical. There’s the big hair, the plaid, and of course those jackets with the vast padded shoulders.
Besides, Heather Chandler is never seen without her red scrunchie, which completes her trademark look. Not only is it her fashion statement, but it is also a sign of her power, making her the girl at the top of the social hierarchy. The infamous scrunchie later passes to Heather Duke and is finally stolen by Veronica, in order to break the chain of command.
