The Cabinet has approved the appointment of Dr. (Eng.) K. Weligepolage as the new Director General of Irrigation, effective from four December 2025.

The appointment follows the scheduled retirement of the current Director General, Mr. I.P. A. Gunasekara, on the same date.

Dr. Weligepolage currently serves as an Additional Director General in the department and is the senior most officer in the Special Grade Civil Group three of the Sri Lanka Engineering Service. 

The proposal was submitted by the Minister of Agriculture, Livestock, Lands and Irrigation.
