Price hikes expected across goods and services following fuel price revision

Various trade unions and industry associations have begun discussions on potential price increases for goods and services in response to the recent fuel price revision.


The consultations aim to address the economic impact of rising fuel costs while ensuring the continued operation of essential services and businesses.


The President of the All Ceylon Bakery Owners’ Association, N.K. Jayawardena, announced that a meeting would be held today to finalize decisions regarding bakery product prices. He stated that bakery owners have urged for an increase in bakery product prices to offset the rising costs.


Conversely, Harshana Rukshan, Chairman of the All Ceylon Restaurant Owners’ Association, emphasized that food prices should not be increased, advocating for measures to protect consumers from further price hikes.


In the transportation sector, the Chairman of the Lanka Private Bus Owners’ Association, Gemunu Wijeratne, called for a 15% increase in bus fares aligned with the fuel price hike.


The Chairman of the Container Transport Owners’ Association, Sanath Manjula, announced that container transport charges had been increased by 20% from midnight yesterday.


These adjustments are aimed at ensuring the uninterrupted operation of import and export procedures amid the rising fuel prices. The decision was made in coordination with representatives from the Port of Colombo and all relevant executive committees, underscoring a collective effort to manage the economic challenges posed by the fuel price increase.
