Sri Lankans in Canada
Canada is home to many Sri Lankans who have migrated for higher studies and as skilled labour to primarily the Greater Toronto Area, Alberta, British Columbia, Ontario, Manitoba, Nova Scotia, and Saskatchewan.
The Sinhalese community living in Canada has a vibrant social and cultural life that revolves around events and activities organised by religious and community organisations. Some of these events include New Year festivals, Buddhist religious celebrations, sports events, theatre, and concerts. Most of the leading boys’ and girls’ schools in Sri Lanka have established links with their traditional old boys’ and old girls’ associations in Canada. These organisations host community and sports events, such as cricket carnivals. Sri Lankans living in Canada also get together to celebrate Sinhala and Tamil Avurudu by following the traditions and customs of auspicious times.
Sri Lankans in Australia
Sri Lankans are the 10th-largest ethnic group in Australia. The city of Melbourne contains just under half of Sri Lankan Australians. A majority of migrants from Sri Lanka over the last five years arrived as skilled immigrants and for higher studies. Melbourne is the home away from home to many Sri Lankans. Sri Lankans gather to celebrate a lot of fun-filled activities and celebrations such as the Tamil and Sinhala Avurudu, events organised by school associations, and concerts hosted by famous bands and artists. When the Sri Lankan cricket team visits for tournaments, thousands of Sri Lankans gather to cheer them on.
Sri Lankans in the US
Despite being from a small country, Sri Lankan Americans have made major contributions to American society. Sri Lankan Americans have also made significant contributions to the population’s medical care. They have been on the cutting edge of technology, developing medical equipment and treating patients.
The Sri Lanka Foundation, based in Los Angeles, America, is dedicated to the preservation of Sri Lankan culture. It aspires to be courageous and proud in its philanthropic efforts and events. Sri Lanka Day is one of the foundation’s most prominent calendar events. Every year, the foundation works hard to offer the sights, tastes, colours, and general feel of Sri Lanka to fans from all across California who converge in one area.
Sri Lankans in Sweden
Many aspiring Sri Lankans are choosing Sweden for higher studies and are settled in Sweden as skilled workers. The Embassy of Sri Lanka in Sweden hosts events to showcase the vibrant spirit of Asia by featuring tantalising food flavours, ayurveda, and wellness, etc. Many Sri Lankans also gather to celebrate Midsummer Day which is one of the most celebrated holidays in Sweden. Midsummer takes place in June and is a celebration of the summer solstice, the longest day of the year.
