Royal and St. Peter’s emerged U13 Division 1 joint champions

Royal College, Colombo (A) and St. Peter’s College, Bambalapitiya (A) named as joint champions of the Under-13 Division 1 Inter-Schools Cricket Tournament yesterday (15) at Ananda College Grounds in Colombo. 

Royal College won the toss and opted to bat first. They posted 225/6 in 50 overs with Nithesh Jayasinghe’s 51 runs off 61 balls. 

Rasula Madarasinghe also chipped in 41 runs while opening bowler from St. Peter’s College Leshan Perera took three wickets for 12 runs in his eight-over spell.

In reply, St. Peter’s College were 124/3 in 37 overs before rain interrupted play.

CR&FC hold off a scare from Air Force 

CR&FC held on against a resurgent Air Force to win by 29-24 in the fourth week game of Nippon Paint Rugby League 2022/23 at Ratmalana yesterday (15). 

Gemunu Chethiya scored twice while Thenuka Nanayakkara and Murshid Zubair scored a try each for CR. For the hosts, Nuwan Perera, Dilan Fernando and Kavish Ruchirantha scored tries for Air Force. 


Wattegama zone shines at the Central Provincial School Sports Colours Award ceremony

Among the 15 education zones, Wattegama education zone managed to win the overall title in the Central Provincial School Sports Colours Award ceremony, while Kandy education zone took second place and Hatton education zone took third place. The Central Provincial School Sports Colours Ceremony was held last Wednesday (11) under the chairmanship of the Central Provincial Governor Lalith U. Gamage at Polgolla Mahinda Rajapaksa Auditorium, Kandy.

In this Colours Awarding ceremony organised for the appreciation of the Central Province students, in the year 2022, the 36th All-Island School Sports Tournament held at the Sugathadasa Stadium in Colombo, the athletes of the Central Province who showed excellent performance, and the awards were given to the Central School students who represented Sri Lanka and won international competitions. 

In addition to the athletes, 1,200 people including their coaches, team teachers, principals, regional education sports directors, teacher advisors and resource persons were evaluated here.

Along with this ceremony, steps were also taken to establish a Central Provincial School Sports Fund, and four coaches were awarded with special awards in recognition of their excellent service for the promotion of sports in the province. Accordingly, coaches Susantha Fernando (athletics), Sanjiva Weerakkodi (athletics), Anura Bandara (athletics), and Susantha Weerasinghe (boxing) received special awards.

Organised by Central Province Education Department Assistant Director of Education (Sports) Atula Jayawardena, Central Province Chief and Secretary of the Ministry of Education Ajith Premasinghe, Provincial Education Director M.G. Amarasiri Piyadasa, and a group of regional education directors were present for the ceremony.
