Gun crime: Weligama PS Chair murdered

The Weligama Pradeshiya Sabha (PS) Chairperson Lasantha Wickramasekara, also known as ‘Midigama Lasa’, who was critically injured in a shooting incident yesterday morning (22), has succumbed to his injuries while being admitted to the hospital.

The shooting had occurred while he was seated in his office at the PS, when two unidentified gunmen had arrived on a motorcycle and opened fire at him. It was revealed that the shooters had entered the PS premises after claiming that they had come to get a letter signed by Wickramasekara.

Wickramasekara, 38, a resident of the Midigama area, had succumbed to the gunshot injuries while being admitted to the Matara District General Hospital. Police said that a pistol firearm had been used in the shooting and that four shots had been fired.

Four Police teams have been assigned to investigate the murder of Wickramasekara, Police Media Spokesperson, Assistant Superintendent of Police and attorney-at-law F.U. Wootler said.

Speaking during the weekly Cabinet media briefing at the Department of Government Information, Wootler said that based on the instructions of the Senior Deputy Inspector General of Police in charge of the Southern Province, the four teams have now commenced investigations regarding the incident.
