In a ceremony emphasising environmental preservation and peace, two forest areas are set to be declared protected reserves today (24), as part of the ongoing “Walk for Peace” programme.

The official designation will be conveyed through a Sannas Patra, which is scheduled to be presented to Venerable Pannyakara Thero of Vietnam and other dignitaries participating in the peace walk. The forests identified for protection are Nagahamulayaya in the Matale District and Padavigampola in the Kegalle District.

Minister of Environment Dhammika Patabendi announced that the formal handover of the Sannas Patra will take place this afternoon at the Beligammana Rajamaha Viharaya, coinciding with the procession’s arrival.

The peace walk, now in its third day, began at the Temple of the Tooth Relic in Kandy.

Venerable Pannyakara Thero, along with members of the Maha Sangha, is expected to walk approximately 25 kilometres today, as part of efforts to promote global peace and environmental awareness.
