- Funding to assist vulnerable communities, including women, girls, and people with disabilities
- Canberra to work with UN and NGOs for urgent delivery of essential services
The Australian Government has announced AUD 1 million in humanitarian assistance to support Sri Lanka’s efforts in responding to Cyclone Ditwah, which has caused widespread flooding, landslides, and damage to homes and infrastructure across the country.
High Commissioner Matthew Duckworth said Australia stands with Sri Lanka at this difficult time. “The Australian Government will be providing AUD 1 million in humanitarian assistance to support Sri Lanka’s response to Cyclone Ditwah. We will work closely with Government, humanitarian actors, and civil society to meet the urgent needs of communities across the country. Our thoughts are with the people of Sri Lanka, particularly those affected by the ongoing crisis,” he said.
In addition to this contribution, Australia is working with local civil society partners to redirect existing funds to meet urgent needs in affected areas. The funding will prioritise vulnerable groups, including women, girls, and people with disabilities. Canberra will also collaborate with humanitarian partners and the United Nations to ensure immediate delivery of essential services.
Australia welcomed the activation of regional response funds, including the Regional Prepositioning Initiative managed by the UN Population Fund (UNFPA) and Australia, which will provide for immediate sexual and reproductive health and protection needs of women and girls affected by the disaster.
