FIBA Asia Cup Under-18: SLBF criticised for levying entry fee

15 Jul 2024

The Sri Lanka Basketball Federation (SLBF) has faced criticism after charging Rs. 600 for entry to the FIBA Asia Cup Under-18 tournament, including from school children, informed sources said.

The decision taken by the SLBF has resulted in several disappointed students turning away from the Sugathadasa Stadium, it has been reliably learnt.

Basketball schools have voiced strong complaints, claiming that such charges hinder the sport’s promotion among the youth.

They have stressed that free entry for school children would foster greater interest and participation in basketball, rather than levying exorbitant amounts, which could dissuade them from pursuing the sport. Meanwhile, critics also alleged that the Federation should prioritise promoting the sport, rather than focusing solely on revenue.

To ensure future growth and engagement, it would be in the sport’s best interest to offer free entry to students, encouraging the next generation of basketball players.

Meanwhile it was learnt the initial price of Rs. 600 was reduced to Rs. 300 for Saturday's (13) Final between India and Sri Lanka, which the neighbouring giants won 87-62.

Efforts made to contact officials from either the Sri Lanka Basketball Federation or the Ministry of Sports to seek their views on the issue, failed, as there was no response from either party.
