India topped Sri Lanka’s largest source market by a significant margin, as Sri Lanka’s tourism sector has surpassed the 1.6 million arrivals threshold for 2026, making 25.3% of the 1,609,759 arrivals Sri Lanka has seen so far in the year, latest arrivals data from the Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority (SLTDA) said.
India was followed by the United Kingdom (UK) with 155,798 tourists, and China with 105,294 tourist arrivals, the report stated.
The remaining top ten source markets year-to-date included: Germany, with a tourist arrival of 94,007 tourists; Russian Federation 81,670; Australia 80,821; France 76,631; the United States (US) 44,046; Netherlands 40,184; and Canada 32,844, the report stated.
Meanwhile, during the first 14 days of September, India led all markets by delivering 22,541 arrivals, representing a 30% share of total tourist entries, while the UK contributed 5,809 visitors (8%), followed by Australia with 4,783 (6%); China with 4,466 (6%); Germany with 4,006 (5%). France represented 2,647; Maldives 2,646; Japan 2,053; Bangladesh 1,983; and Spain 1,892, rounding out the top ten origin markets for the period.
