Sri Lanka and Japan strengthen ties with new economic, security, and development deals

President Anura Kumara Dissanayake met Japanese Prime Minister (PM) Ishiba Shigeru in Tokyo today (29), reaffirming commitments under the Comprehensive Partnership framework.


Talks focused on economic recovery, debt restructuring, infrastructure, trade, and regional security. 


Japan pledged continued support, including resumption of 11 yen loan projects, Bandaranaike International Airport (BIA) Phase 2 development, and aid for energy and digital projects.


Both nations signed agreements to boost Sri Lanka’s dairy sector and urban transport, while Japan will provide advanced unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) to enhance maritime surveillance and disaster response.


The leaders emphasized restoring investor confidence, promoting Japanese investments, and strengthening cooperation in the Indian Ocean region.
