New weather disturbance possible in Bay of Bengal by October 31

The Department of Meteorology has warned that another weather disturbance could develop in the Bay of Bengal by October 31, with officials closely monitoring the situation.

Speaking on Ada Derana ‘BIG FOCUS’ programme today (27), Sachith Wickramasuriya, Duty Meteorologist at the Department of Meteorology said that officials are closely monitoring the situation and that forecasts could be issued as more information becomes available.

The official noted that such disturbances could occur under prevailing El Niño conditions.

He also explained that the formation of a weather system earlier in October had contributed to the cooling of the Bay of Bengal, potentially affecting the development of another large system.

Although the possibility of a new disturbance has been identified, Sachith Wickramasuriya cautioned that forecasting complex weather systems can be challenging, with a degree of uncertainty in predictions.

He also stressed that the development of a cyclone or other weather system in the Bay of Bengal does not necessarily mean Sri Lanka will experience increased rainfall or stronger winds.

The impact would depend on how the system influences wind patterns around the island.
