- Parcels temporarily halted on Kandy-Matale line
The section of the railway line between the Kandy and Peradeniya Stations which was affected due to ground subsidence has been repaired and train services restored, the Railways Department said.
Accordingly, the train that departed from Colombo Fort for Badulla at 5.55 a.m. has continued its journey to Kandy.
It is reported that the ground subsidence was caused by heavy rainfall in Kandy over the past few days.
Due to the ground subsidence of a section of the railway line between Kandy and Peradeniya, the acceptance of parcels for transport by trains on the Kandy and Matale line has been temporarily suspended.
The Railways Department had also temporarily halted train services between Kandy and Peradeniya on the Up-country Railway Line from Wednesday (11) morning.
Train operations were suspended due to the ground subsidence below a section of the railway track. A team of officials from the National Building Research Organisation has visited the site to inspect the area.
In response to the situation, Sri Lanka Transport Board buses have been deployed to transport passengers between the Peradeniya and Kandy Stations.
It is also reported that the acceptance of railway parcels for the Kandy and Matale route will remain suspended until further notice.
