Cricketing overhaul: Dasun's captaincy to be over today?

20 Sep 2023 | BY Indrajith Subasinghe

Reliable sources state that it has been decided to remove Dasun Shanaka from the leadership of the Sri Lankan cricket team. It is reported that the relevant cricket authorities have discussed this in depth yesterday (19), and it is said that the decision will be communicated to Dasun today. Accordingly, it is also reported that the new leadership of the team will be assigned to Kusal Mendis.

With the massive defeat of Sri Lanka in the finals of the Asia Cup against India, some people were tempted to question Dasun's leadership, but it is said that his inability to contribute enough to the team as a player during the last few matches will be the primary reason for his removal.

Even so, Dasun's results as a captain are remarkable and he has led 39 ODI matches, winning 23, and recording a winning percentage of 58.97%. Arjuna Ranatunga (winning percentage 46.11%), Sanath Jayasuriya (46.11%), Mahela Jayawardene (55.38%), Angelo Mathews (46.23%), Tillakaratne Dilshan (42.31%) are the other captains who held the leadership to the Sri Lankan team. In comparison, only Kumar Sangakkara (60.00%) has recorded a higher ODI match-winning percentage than Dasun Shanaka

In 2021, after big, heavy defeats in the history of Sri Lanka cricket, the captaincy was handed over to Dasun. He recorded the highest consecutive one-day winning streak in the country, winning the one-day series against Australia after thirty years, winning three consecutive one-day series after eight years, etc.

Travelling to Pakistan with an inexperienced team and defeating the world number one Pakistan team 3-0 in the T20 series, winning an Asian Cup for Sri Lanka after 8 years… Dasun's name is also mentioned as the captain who has won the most T20 games for Sri Lanka.

Despite being dropped from the captaincy for some reason, as an all-rounder, Dasun is more likely to be included in the squad for the World Cup.
