Two women, including an aunt and her niece, were killed after being struck by a train near Kalutara South Railway Station at around 4.30 a.m. today (16).

Police stated that the women were walking along the railway tracks towards the southern platform to board a train to Anuradhapura when they were hit by a service train travelling from Maradana to Galle.

The victims were reportedly travelling with two other family members to attend a religious event in Anuradhapura.

Their bodies are due to be taken to Kalutara Teaching Hospital.

Kalutara South Police are conducting further investigations.
