President Anura Kumara Dissanayake has outlined plans for significant improvements to Sri Lanka’s public transport systems, including buses, highways, and train services, as part of the 2025 budget.

Accordingly, a pilot project will introduce 100 luxury coach buses to 3 main road corridors entering Colombo City: Kottawa-Pettah, Kadawatha-Pettah, and Moratuwa-Pettah, with an allocation of Rs. 3,000 million for the buses. The buses will operate under a new entity, the "Metro Bus Company," and will be fully digitalised.

The Sri Lanka Transport Board (SLTB) will implement 200 more luxury buses using its funds.

In railway services, Rs. 500 million will be allocated for the renovation of existing train compartments, and Rs. 250 million will be set aside for the local manufacturing of new compartments.

The Government also plans to extend the Kelani Valley line beyond Avissawella in phases, although construction will begin only after a thorough study of the impacted areas. Another Rs. 250 million has been allocated for this purpose.
