- A luxurious getaway on the south-western coast
If you’re looking for a place to unwind and enjoy the beauty of nature, look no further than Villa Birdlake. Located on Sri Lanka’s South-western coast, this luxurious hotel is a perfect getaway for couples and families alike. With its in-house restaurant, infinity pool, and stunning lake views, Villa Birdlake offers an unforgettable experience for all its guests.
The property was originally a private residence built by the late Hubert Edwin Weerasooriya, a prominent lawyer from the Galle District. The hotel has since been passed down to his daughters and eventually to his grandson, Treshan Weerasooriya, who now oversees the property. The hotel has undergone renovations in the past three years, blending the old with the new to create a unique and stylish boutique hotel.
The hotel offers 10 spacious rooms, each with a nature-inspired view of the lake. All rooms are fitted with modern amenities such as flat-screen TVs, mini-fridges, and ensuite bathrooms. The hotel also offers free Wi-Fi throughout the property. Guests can choose from deluxe rooms with a lake view, garden access rooms with direct access to the lake and infinity pool, and a suite with two rooms and exclusive lounges.
Villa Birdlake Director Treshan Weerasooriya explained, “At Villa Birdlake, we put our customers’ requests at the forefront and make you feel exceptionally special from the moment you walk into our dwelling. Hospitality is not our profession. For us, it’s a way of life, a passion, which is rooted into our very last vein.”
The interior of the hotel is a work of art, featuring bespoke artwork and crafts, and a neutral colour palette complemented by earthy accents. The furniture and designs are comfortable and luxurious, creating a comfortable and inviting environment. The dining options at Villa Birdlake specialise in fusion cuisine, using local ingredients, some from their garden, to prepare delectable Sri Lankan cuisine, including some of the family’s secret recipes, and an assortment of international fare. The restaurant is also open for dining for everyone.
The hotel also offers a wide variety of activities and excursions, including bird watching, nature walks, canoeing, and boat rides. They can also arrange guided excursions to nearby attractions such as the Kanneliya rainforest, the Moonstone mine factory in Meetiyagoda, the Puppetry Museum and Mask Factory in Ambalangoda, and the turtle hatchery and snorkelling in Hikkaduwa.

Our experience
We actually had the opportunity to indulge in a stay at the hotel. From the moment we stepped into Villa Birdlake, we knew we were in for a truly unforgettable experience. The warm and welcoming staff greeted us with genuine smiles and offered us a refreshing welcome drink as we checked in. As we made our way to our room, we couldn’t help but take in the stunning surroundings – the lush greenery, the sparkling infinity pool, and the tranquil Hikkaduwa Lake.
Our room was spacious, elegantly decorated with nature-inspired details, and boasted a breath-taking 180-degree view of the lake. We immediately felt at home and were impressed with the modern amenities. The ensuite bathroom was well-appointed with all the necessary amenities, and we were thrilled to discover that our room also had convenient access to the infinity pool.
One of the highlights of our stay was undoubtedly the food. The in-house restaurant offered a fusion of local and international cuisine, and we were blown away by the flavours and presentation of each dish. The chefs use local ingredients, some from their garden, and even served some of the family’s secret recipes. We highly recommend trying the Sri Lankan dishes – they were some of the best we’ve ever had.
Beyond the luxurious amenities and exceptional dining, it was the hospitality and personal touches that truly made our stay at Villa Birdlake unforgettable. Weerasooriya and his team went above and beyond to make us feel welcome and comfortable, and we truly felt like we were part of their family. It’s clear that for them, hospitality is not just a profession, but a way of life and a passion that shines through in everything they do.
Our experience staying at Villa Birdlake was nothing short of magical. It’s a hidden gem that offers unparalleled hospitality, luxurious amenities, and a unique blend of history and modernity. We left feeling rejuvenated, inspired, and with memories that will last a lifetime. We can’t wait to go back and experience it all over again.
If you’re looking for a luxurious retreat amidst lush nature, Villa Birdlake is the perfect destination. As Weerasooriya puts it, “We make you feel like you’re in your own home away from home.”
