The Ministry of Digital Economy has revealed plans to link Local Government institutions, educational institutions, and divisional secretariates to the Govpay platform while expanding the digital payment of traffic fines to cover the entire island.

Speaking to The Sunday Morning Business, Ministry of Digital Economy Acting Secretary Waruna Sri Dhanapala revealed that from April 2024 to date, the total value of transactions carried out through the GovPay platform had exceeded Rs. 1.2 billion, with nearly 50,000 transactions recorded.

He further stated that the platform offered around 3,097 citizen services at present in collaboration with 201 linked institutions and added that plans were underway to further expand the number of institutions connected to the GovPay platform.

“There are a large number of Government institutions that are to be linked; this is in the pipeline. They want to be brought in as soon as possible. This includes some of the Local Government institutions, free educational institutions, and divisional secretariates,” he stated.

Dhanapala further revealed that plans were underway to extend the facility for the payment of digital traffic fines through the GovPay platform to cover the entire island.

He noted that banking institutions had been extremely cooperative in facilitating the operationalisation of the GovPay platform through their fintech applications.

The Acting Secretary added that the future success of the platform largely depended on these banking institutions actively promoting such services, while the ministry ensured that all Government institutions had the necessary internal mechanisms in place to support digital transactions.

The GovPay platform is meant to enable citizens and businesses to make payments for various Government-related transactions, including taxes, fines, utility bills, education fees, and other service charges, via banks and digital financial channels.

The platform project is managed by LankaPay, the country’s national payment network, under the supervision of the Information and Communication Technology Agency (ICTA) and the Central Bank of Sri Lanka (CBSL).
