Former Minister of Public Security, Tiran Alles, has been summoned by the Criminal Investigation Department (CID) to record a statement regarding the death of a police sergeant from the Colombo Crimes Division (CCD) during a shooting in Weligama, Matara, in 2023.

The CID official stated that the former minister is being questioned due to suspicions he may be aware of details related to the incident.

Accordingly, former IGP Deshabandu Tennakoon is remanded in connection with the case. The incident, which occurred on 31 December 2023, led to the death of a police sergeant outside the W15 Hotel.

The Matara Magistrate's Court recently ordered the arrest of eight police officers, including Tennakoon.
