The Sri Lanka Tourism Development Authority (SLTDA) assured prospective tourists visiting the island that Sri Lanka is safe for travel, owing to the alleviating weather conditions as cyclone Ditwah moved further north, towards Tamil Nadu on the eve of 29 November (Saturday).
“Sri Lanka remains safe and open for travel and tourism. Major tourist destinations are operating as usual, with hotels, transport services, and attractions continuing without disruption,” the statement, released on Friday (28 Nov.) said.
The weather conditions, as of yesterday (30 Nov.), had claimed the lives of 334 Sri Lankans over the weekend, with 370 missing.
As of yesterday (30), weather conditions in Sri Lanka had been improving with light rain showers, according to the Sri Lankan Department of Meteorology.
“Fairly strong winds up to 50 kmph at times can be expected over Northern Province. The general public is kindly requested to take adequate precautions to minimise damages caused by temporary localised strong winds and lightning during thundershowers,” a statement released by the Department said.
However, a statement by the European Union’s Emergency Response Coordination Centre on 29 November further forecasted that flash floods, landslides and riverine flooding are likely.
“Comprehensive safety measures are in place, with tourism partners working closely alongside local authorities to ensure your comfort and security,” the SLTDA stated in its own statement.
“Weather updates are provided through official channels, enabling travellers to plan their journeys with confidence.”
Sri Lanka historically experiences its highest inflows of tourists within the year, during the month of December.
According to First Capital Research, a financial and market research advisory, though Sri Lanka had expected to reach its tourism earnings potential of 2018, which saw $4.4 billion in yearly earnings, Sri Lanka’s earnings in the first ten months of the year remained subdued.
The Central Bank of Sri Lanka (CBSL) reported that total tourism earnings from January to October amounted to $2,659 million. Tourism earnings for October were recorded at $186.1 million.
