- Doc nabbed for driving vehicle with fake no. plates
A jeep, modified to resemble an official vehicle used by senior Police officers, has been taken into custody by the Kandy Headquarters (HQ) Police. According to information received by the Kandy HQ Police, the vehicle was seized on Wednesday (3), and at the time of the seizure, two individuals were inside.
Police also reported that two ‘walkie-talkie’ communication devices, similar to those used by Police officers, were found in the vehicle. Except for the front windshield, all other windows of the jeep were fully tinted. Police said that the vehicle had been frequently seen operating on roads in Kandy.
The Kandy HQ Police is investigating whether the jeep is an assembled vehicle. It has also been reported that a report will be requested from the Department of Motor Traffic in connection with this.
Investigations have uncovered that the jeep belongs to a person named Amith Weerasinghe, a member of a political organisation known as the ‘Mahason Balakaya’ which had been active in Kandy. Accordingly, the Police has informed him to appear and provide a statement.
Meanwhile, a female doctor has been arrested by the Crimes Investigation Division of the Kandy Police on suspicion of driving a luxury vehicle with forged number plates. The arrest was made during a search operation carried out on the Sumangala Mawatha in Wariyapola, Kandy, following a tip-off received by the Police Emergency Response Unit. According to Police investigations, while the vehicle is registered under the name of the suspect’s husband – who is also a doctor – the number plates displayed on the vehicle belonged to a car registered under his brother’s name. The arrested doctor is currently attached to a main hospital in Kandy.
