She glides through the still blue water like a mermaid in the boundless ocean. Distinguished in both her academics and extracurricular activities, she has come under the spotlight among thousands of students at Asian Grammar School. Chenuthi Chenaya Thomas Sly, born and bred in Hibutana, is one of the brightest students at her school. When we asked Chenuthi about her success, she did not forget to express her gratitude towards the school and the principal. “Actually, my parents, school, and coach were always behind my success. They encouraged me to achieve my targets. My father is Kuminda Tyronne Thomas Sly. He is working in the US embassy. My mother is Diana Kumarage. Our principal, Dr. Thushari Koralage always inspired me saying, ‘Yes, you can be the first.’ In addition, I have to thank my coach Keerthi Wijegoonawardhana, because he makes great efforts to sharpen our skills,” she said.
In a conversation with The Sunday Morning Little Stars, this week is Chethuli.
Chenuthi, how are you?
I am fine. These days I am busy because I am studying and going to swimming practices.
Tell us about yourself.
I am Chenuthi Chenaya Thomas Sly. I am in grade eight, and my younger brother is Kenuth Yuhas Thomas Sly. He is in grade four. I have a growing passion for swimming. This is why I joined the school swimming team. I have faced many challenges but never shied away from those challenges. I like to take up challenges and showcase my talents. Speaking of my parents, my father is working in the US embassy. He is Kuminda Tyronne Thomas Sly, and my mother is Diana Kumarage. My coach is Keerthi Wijegoonawardhana.
How did you join the swimming team?
I started swimming at my school – Asian Grammar School. On my very first day, I was scared of the pool. But our coach trained me well.
What do you do in your leisure time?
I do a lot of things during my leisure time. I read books and listen to good music. But my hobby is cycling.
Who inspires you to achieve your goals?
My parents, our school, and my coach. They always inspire me, and my friends help me in different ways. I have so many friends at my school. I am lucky to have such kind-hearted friends.
Can you speak about your friends?
My best friend is Thisavi. She always encourages me. And also, I should remember Chithuli, Thanumi, Kadeesha, and all of my schoolmates.
How do you face failures in your life?
For me, failure is not a failure. It is an opportunity. We should be able to consider failures as opportunities in our lives. Then, we can face challenges and win at life. For example, when I contested at the 100-metre freestyle event in the under-14 category, I could only win second place. However, I was not discouraged and succeeded in securing first place at the same event.
Do you attend tuition classes?
Not at all. I have faith in our school teachers and our swimming coach. Our teachers teach us well, and our school provides us with many opportunities. We can participate in sports, concerts, and other extracurricular activities. Our principal always advises us to pursue our studies while contributing to sports. My school provides everything I need.
What is your message for others?
Don’t worry about failures in your life. Try and try until you can achieve your goal.
