Crime: Police probe woman’s body in car

Police have launched a full investigation after the body of a woman was found inside a locked car in Teldeniya, with evidence pointing to the involvement of her boyfriend. The deceased has been identified as a 33-year-old physiotherapist attached to the Ampara District General Hospital and a resident of Weligama. Police received a telephone call at around 2 p.m. on Wednesday (17) from an unidentified person reporting that a body was inside a vehicle parked near the Teldeniya Base Hospital. Officers who arrived at the scene found a locked car, and, after forcing it open, discovered the woman’s body inside. The victim’s boyfriend may have transported the body in the vehicle and abandoned it at the location before fleeing. The woman had been staying at a hotel in Nuwara Eliya from 3 June to Tuesday (16). Closed circuit television camera footage reportedly shows her being carried, while unconscious, by her boyfriend, during that period. Police also confirmed that the initial report to the Teldeniya Police was made by a person believed to be the boyfriend. However, he has since gone missing. Following a Magisterial inquiry, the body was placed at the morgue of the Teldeniya Hospital for the post-mortem examination.

Unidentified body near Kelani Bridge

An investigation has been launched following the discovery of an unidentified body near the Kelani Bridge in Sedawatta, within the Grandpass Police Division. The body was found after officers received information regarding a corpse that had washed ashore in the area. The victim is a male aged between 35 and 40 yeaRs  The deceased was approximately five feet five inches tall and had hair about one inch in length. He was found shirtless and dressed in blue shorts. Following the Magistrate’s inquiry, the body has been transferred to the morgue of the Colombo National Hospital for further examination.

17 Indians, 9 Lankans arrested for smuggling gold aboard passenger ferry

Customs has arrested 26 passengers who allegedly attempted to smuggle gold illegally to India aboard the passenger ferry SG 423, which was scheduled to sail from the Kankesanthurai (KKS) Port to Nagapattinam (India). The arrests were made during a special operation conducted on the basis of credible intelligence received by the Customs authorities. Among those detained are 17 Indian nationals and nine Sri Lankan citizens. Six of the suspects are women. Officers discovered concealed gold in the possession of two of the suspects. As part of the ongoing investigation, all 26 passengers have been referred to the Jaffna Teaching Hospital for medical examinations, including checks to determine whether any gold had been concealed internally.

Luxury drug asset house sealed

The Central Crime Investigation Bureau has taken steps to freeze a luxury house valued at approximately Rs 40 million in the Ganemulla area, allegedly owned by Nilanthi Perera, alias Kudu Kumari, who is currently in prison on drug trafficking charges. Before the house was officially sealed, a group of individuals investigating allegations that it had been acquired illegally had removed a number of valuable items from the property, including fixtures such as doors and windows installed in the house, and damaged the property. The alleged theft occurred after the inquiry commenced.
