The government has taken steps to strengthen water management measures in preparation for possible El Niño conditions, Minister Susil Ranasinghe stated.

He said a coordinated mechanism involving key institutions responsible for water management has been established to ensure preparedness and an effective response.

The Minister noted that the dry period between July and August could be more severe than usual, while rainfall during September may remain below normal.

He added that discussions have been held with relevant institutions, including the Irrigation Department, Mahaweli Authority, National Water Supply and Drainage Board and electricity authorities, to prepare response plans.
