After months of delays: Govt allocates building for Women's Commission

After months of repeated requests for office space, the Ministry of Public Administration, Provincial Councils, and Local Government has allocated a building for the National Commission on Women.

This was revealed as part of a response to a Right to Information (RTI) request submitted by The Daily Morning.

However, The Daily Morning learns the allocated building is not in a condition suitable for immediate use, as it requires significant renovations before the Commission can begin operations from the premises.

The allocation follows months of delays and repeated appeals by Commission members and stakeholders seeking a permanent office space to enable the institution to function effectively.

Established under the Women’s Empowerment Act 2024, which came into force in 2024, the National Women's Commission was expected to begin functioning last year (2025), but was unable to do so due to the lack of office space and financial provisions.

There were also allegations the Government was attempting to place the Commission in the Ministry of Women and Child Affairs, a move which several parties claimed would undermine its independence.
