Mama’s Boys Films breaks records with 7 awards

07 Jan 2024 | By Dimithri Wijesinghe

La Signore and Mama’s Boys Films had a record-breaking moment with their sensational victory at the 2023 Closeup Derana Music Video Awards, as the music video for ‘As Wasa’ not only took centre stage but also made history by clinching a remarkable seven out of nine awards – an unprecedented feat.

Speaking to the three-man team behind Mama’s Boys Films – Ilham Hossen, Dimuthu Kalinga, and Sithum Samarajeewa – it’s clear that this triumph is more than a win, it’s a coronation of the artistic chemistry that has flourished over three successful collaborations with La Signore, including ‘Mata Rawana’ and ‘China Town’.

As ‘As Wasa’ dominated the awards, securing prestigious titles such as ‘Best Music Video of the Year 2022,’ ‘Best Sri Lankan Pop Video – 2022,’ ‘Best Direction’ by Mama’s Boys Films, ‘Best Cinematography’ by Dimuthu Kalinga, ‘Best Editing’ by Sithum Samarajeewa, ‘Best Art Direction’ by Kumara Karawdeniya, and ‘Best Actress in a Video’ – Manju de Silva, it marked a momentous night for both La Signore and Mama’s Boys Films.

Beyond the glimmering trophies, the evening witnessed a notable announcement by Ilham Hossen of Mama’s Boys Films. Taking the stage for ‘Best Director,’ he revealed their quest for a producer to bring their long-nurtured film project to fruition. After investing years in crafting their script, Mama’s Boys Films is set to translate its creative vision onto the big screen.

About Mama’s Boys

Speaking about the origins of Mama’s Boys Films, Ilham shared how in 2015, three aspiring filmmakers – himself, Kalinga, and Samarajeewa – joined forces to bring their dream to life, giving birth to Mama’s Boys Films.

He noted how their shared passion for filmmaking initially found expression in music videos, and, in a remarkably short span, Mama’s Boys Films ascended to a position of prominence, revolutionising the scene with groundbreaking creations. Expanding horizons, their talents seamlessly transitioned into crafting television commercials, where their innovative work garnered them some attention.

Its recent triumph at the 2023 Derana Music Video Awards, clinching a record-breaking seven awards, solidifies its position as a trailblazer in the industry. Now, on the cusp of yet another milestone, Mama’s Boys Films is poised to embark on its inaugural feature film project, marking a new chapter in its journey of creative excellence.

Sharing the story of the humble beginnings of the collaboration with La Signore, Ilham said: “Our journey with him began when he approached us to create a music video for ‘Mata Rawana’. During that period, there were no prominent award ceremonies to recognise our work, but ‘Mata Rawana’ marked a significant milestone as a large-scale production. As young filmmakers, this project provided us with invaluable experience and Lahiru’s trust in us was crucial. Subsequently, in 2017, we collaborated on three more music videos, including the groundbreaking ‘China Town,’ the first music video (MV) to be screened at a film theatre. This was a challenging project where Lahiru’s evolving brand as La Signore required a distinct presentation. Amid a financial crisis and tight budgets, we navigated external challenges, exercising our creative muscles extensively. Our dedication to realising a creative vision became a driving force behind the success, highlighting the essence of our commitment.”

Elaborating further on his announcement at the Derana music awards with regard to their upcoming film project, Ilham said: “Taking a break from our routine TV commercials, we spent the last three years writing a movie script. At the Derana award ceremony, we seized the opportunity to unveil our project and garnered interest from potential producers. On stage, I articulated our conditions, emphasising our mission not only for ourselves but also for future generations of artistes. The lack of proper financial management for artistes in Sri Lanka compared to global standards motivated us to champion change. With our movie project, we aim to advocate for artistes’ true value and creative freedom. Acknowledging the importance of finances and return on investment, we understand that finding a producer aligned with our vision may take time, but we are committed to persevering for the art’s sake. This journey reflects our confidence in the enduring return on investment that extends beyond mere financial considerations.”

Challenges as young filmmakers

Ilham noted that in the realm of filmmaking, where each project involved the livelihoods of 50-60 individuals, encompassing roles such as assistants, technicians, makeup artists, art directors, and cameramen, the primary challenge resided in budgetary constraints. While they are confident in their ability to deliver noteworthy projects, the critical concern revolves around ensuring timely and rightful compensation – the dues owed to them.

He said: “In all honesty, considering the experiences of our Hollywood counterparts, the budgets in Sri Lanka are notably low, even with substantial creativity at our disposal. Despite this, Sri Lanka stands as an excellent filmmaking destination globally. The industry, however, requires more exposure and experience on the international stage. Even our seasoned professionals lack global recognition and we observe a stagnation of storytelling and concepts. To foster innovation and diversity, the industry needs individuals who dare to think differently and embrace the unconventional. From the perspective of a young filmmaker and audience member, the film industry lacks fresh perspectives.”

Addressing the academic background of film students, he noted that the current situation raised serious concerns: “Despite acquiring knowledge from universities or academies, many students miss the practical understanding crucial for filmmaking. The practical aspects differ significantly from academic teachings, requiring hands-on experience to navigate the distinct challenges of this unique world. Film students need exposure to practical exercises to understand the nuances and complexities of filmmaking.”

Moreover, he noted how filmmaking was deeply rooted in human connection, demanding collaboration and sensitivity. Artistes, being inherently sensitive individuals, grapple with the demanding nature of the industry. Operating in a third-world country, where the industry operates 24/7, poses unique challenges. “Unlike Bollywood and Hollywood, where filmmaking occurs in shifts, we often have a single day to capture all necessary shots, intensifying the workload. Therefore, practical knowledge becomes indispensable in preparing students for the multifaceted and demanding landscape of filmmaking.”

La Signore on Mama’s Boys and the Lankan music industry

Lahiru Perera, aka La Signore himself, shared his thoughts on the win at the awards: “In reflecting on Sri Lankan award ceremonies, I’ve observed varying experiences with different awards, which haven’t always left me with a favourable impression. Despite my reservations, I’ve been participating in the MV awards since 2015 and it stands out as the only one dedicated to our industry. Over my 15 years in the industry, this award show has allowed me to rediscover the joy of these events, especially when I approached it with minimal expectations. At a time when I was deeply focused on pushing creative boundaries and crafting something unique, receiving an award brought immense joy as it felt like a genuine acknowledgment.”

Speaking on his collaboration with Mama’s Boys Films, he said: “Unlike instances where artistes might artificially create accolades for themselves, I take pride in never influencing or demanding victories in that manner. This win for Mama’s Boys is particularly special because it was authentic and unexpected. When collaborating on Mama’s Boys Films, my goal is to elevate my collaborator’s talent significantly. The creative concept is entirely credited to the production effort and my role is to contribute the right mood to bring their vision to life. I consider myself a supporting element in these collaborations.”

Lahiru also shared some insight into the Sri Lankan music industry and its trajectory as he sees it: “On a global stage, Sri Lanka may be conceptually behind in areas like audio and video, but the gap is gradually narrowing. While we lack benchmarks or standards, there’s a growing belief that Sri Lanka has the potential to compete internationally. Although there’s a notable difference when compared to artistes like Kendrick Lamar or Bruno Mars, there’s a recognition that Sri Lanka can catch up and make its mark. When it comes to developing and releasing a music video in Sri Lanka, it serves as a tool to elevate the artiste’s brand. Unlike some other markets, the financial return on investment may not be immediate, but the purpose of MVs is to build the artiste’s brand over time. In Sri Lanka, the revenue model isn’t straightforward – it’s not a situation where a specific budget leads to a proportional financial return. Instead, music videos contribute to establishing and strengthening an artiste’s brand, playing a crucial role in their overall identity and market presence.”

Mama’s Boys’ future projects

Speaking about upcoming projects, Ilham said: “When delving into our upcoming projects, we’ve nearly brought all other endeavours to a temporary halt, placing an unwavering focus on our upcoming film project. Throughout this year, our singular dedication lies with this film and we’re deliberately steering clear of other distractions. Engaged in discussions with potential producers, we are in the process of conceptualising a substantial project that holds great promise. For those who resonate with the idea of supporting young creatives aspiring to set new standards in the industry, we extend an open invitation to collaborate. Young, aspiring talents are encouraged to reach out, as fostering these connections forms a pivotal part of our vision for 2024.”

Ilham shared that when it came to their future vision as a production house, it was worth highlighting their standing as a premier production house for music videos in Sri Lanka. “To artistes, we impart the importance of placing trust in their music video directors and creative teams. Collaborating with artistes like Lahiru and Shanuka, our commitment lies in crafting distinctive and innovative pieces,” he said, noting how they as a collective advocated for artistes to cultivate a trusting relationship with their filmmakers, believing that such partnerships were fundamental to elevating the industry.

As for the coming year, he said: “Looking forward, amid financial challenges posed by taxes and the prevailing crisis, we anticipate the need for ingenuity to navigate budget constraints. While the path ahead may be challenging, honing our skills and finding creative, cost-effective solutions will be imperative in ensuring our productions maintain a grandiose appearance.”
