Ashoka Kottahachchi of the National People’s Power (NPP) was elected Mayor of the Matale Municipal Council with 12 votes, while M. Morgan of the Labour Congress was named Deputy Mayor uncontested. 

The vote proceeded despite a walkout by 10 councillors, including Samagi Jana Balawegaya (SJB) members, who protested the presence of an allegedly ineligible councillor. 

No party holds a majority in the council.
