Bhikkhu Association in Europe requests robes for incarcerated monks

08 Oct 2026 | By Staff Writer

The Sri Lankan Bhikkhu Association in Europe has requested legal provisions to allow incarcerated Buddhist monks to wear their monastic robes instead of lay clothing when taken outside prison.

The association stated that seeing monks in lay clothing outside prison causes distress, particularly when such images are shared through mainstream and social media.

It further noted that punishment should promote rehabilitation while preserving the personal dignity of monks who are expected to return to religious service after completing their sentences.
