- One more dead, 4 including singer K. Sujeewa among injured but in stable condition
Two persons have been reported dead, while at least four others were left injured following a shooting incident at Oruwala in Athurugiriya.
The shooting reportedly took place during the opening ceremony of a beauty salon near the Clock Tower in Athurugiriya.
The injured individuals had initially been admitted for treatment to the Homagama Base Hospital, according to the Police. The deceased include 55-year-old businessman Surendra Wasantha Perera also known as ‘Club Wasantha’ and a 38-year-old male, while singer ‘K. Sujeewa’ is also among the injured from the shooting incident, the Police said.
Three of the four injured are women. An injured woman (Sujeewa) and a man are being treated at the Colombo National Hospital while other women are being treated at the Homagama Hospital. The two patients who were transferred to the Colombo National Hospital are currently receiving treatment in the Hospital’s Intensive Care Unit, according to the Deputy Director of the Hospital Dr. Rukshan Bellana. He further mentioned that a woman and a man were admitted to the Emergency Treatment Unit and that both of them had sustained injuries from the waist down. Dr. Bellana also said that although the wound on the said woman’s leg is quite serious, her condition is now stable.
Police said that footage of the vehicle in which the suspects had arrived as well as the gunmen carrying out the shooting were recorded on nearby closed circuit television (CCTV) cameras. Police investigations revealed that the shooters had arrived in a white car and that they had used two Type-56 assault rifles to carry out the shooting. The car used in the shooting has been found in the Korathota area in Kaduwela by the Police. CCTV footage shows the suspects leaving the car on the roadside and fleeing in a van.
