In a significant and progressive move, the Government is actively considering the implementation of a new sex education syllabus in schools to dismantle the prevalent taboos surrounding discussions on sexuality.
Ministry of Education Secretary Nihal Ranasinghe confirmed the inclusion of this initiative in the education sector reforms proposed for 2024.
Ranasinghe told The Sunday Morning that the Cabinet-appointed sub-committee for educational reforms was currently engaged in suggesting comprehensive reforms.
The committee is rigorously evaluating all facets of the education sector, encompassing both higher education and general education.
“We are following the process. The committee is assessing the curriculum and administrative, legal, and structural reforms, and the matter will be taken before the parliamentary oversight committee next week,” stated Ranasinghe.
He emphasised that sex education was an integral component of these proposed reforms.
This decision marks a notable departure from the historical avoidance and stigmatisation of the subject, often deeming it inappropriate or sinful. Challenging the ignorance surrounding matters of sexuality, this move reflects a recognition of the critical importance of providing supervised and accurate information to the youth.
If approved, the incorporation of sex education into the curriculum is expected to bring about a transformative shift in the education system, fostering a more informed and empowered generation.
