Leonid meteor shower visible in Sri Lankan sky

16 Nov 2025 | BY Staff Writer

The Leonid meteor shower, described as the largest meteor shower of 2025, can be observed from Sri Lanka starting tonight(16), and into tomorrow(17) morning.

Astronomer and Senior Lecturer Gihan Weerasekara said the shower, named after the Leo constellation, is composed of fast, bright shooting stars.

It is caused by Earth passing through the dusty trail of the Comet Tempel-Tuttle.

He noted the best time to observe the phenomenon is between four a.m. and five a.m. tomorrow, when observers can typically expect to see 15 to 20 meteors per hour.

The meteors appear brighter due to the high speed of the particles entering the atmosphere.
