The Education Ministry has informed the Bar Association of Sri Lanka (BASL) that it will be consulted in the upcoming review process for introducing law as a subject for GCE Advanced Level (GCE A/L), the BASL said yesterday (26).
Speaking to The Daily Morning, BASL Secretary, Chathura Galhena said the Ministry has acknowledged their proposal to include law in the school curriculum and has invited the BASL for consultation.
"We have written to the Government requesting them to introduce law as a subject, and they have informed us that when the reviewing process starts, the BASL and the relevant law faculties will be invited for consultation," he said.
When queried as to whether the new modules being introduced this year (2026) have taken the suggestion into consideration, he explained the current syllabi for GCE Ordinary Level classes have not incorporated law studies. However, he noted the proposal will be taken into consideration when the modules for the A/L syllabuses begin to be developed.
The BASL originally submitted its request to the Ministry last year (2025), amidst the wide-ranging educational reforms planned by the Ministry. The Association has proposed that a subject on law, or a similar discipline, be introduced as a compulsory component of primary education and as an elective subject at the A/L. The BASL has emphasised this need as a timely necessity, citing the law being taught as a subject in schools worldwide.
