- Hamaad Fahim on his engaging card game DrunkDeck
In the realm of social entertainment, few experiences compare to the thrill of a well-designed card game. One such online game that is gaining popularity is DrunkDeck, a creation by the innovative Hamaad Fahim. With its straightforward gameplay and enticing challenges, DrunkDeck has become a go-to choice for those seeking a fun and engaging addition to their parties and gatherings.
At its core, DrunkDeck is a refreshingly simple game that guarantees laughter, excitement, and memorable moments. The concept is straightforward; players take turns flipping cards, each bearing a unique challenge or task. The twist lies in the decision players face upon revealing their card. They must choose between bravely completing the given task and scoring a point by pressing “Done” or, if they’re not up for it, accepting the penalty of taking a drink and passing the turn to the next player by pressing “Drank”.
Hamaad Fahim carefully crafted the game with the intention of fostering a lively and interactive atmosphere among friends, couples, singles, or even a bachelorette party. By blending the thrill of competition with the camaraderie that comes with shared experiences, the game creates a perfect balance between laughter-inducing challenges and the social lubrication of a well-enjoyed libation.
Throughout the game, players encounter an array of challenges that range from mildly amusing to delightfully outrageous. Whether it’s revealing embarrassing secrets, engaging in spontaneous dance-offs, or daring feats of silliness, DrunkDeck ensures that every flip of a card leads to unforgettable moments and shared laughter.
The road to creating DrunkDeck was not without its hurdles. Fahim faced numerous challenges during the development and testing phase, striving to strike the right balance between engaging tasks and the game’s overall flow. However, his determination and commitment paid off, resulting in a game that captures the essence of enjoyable social gatherings.
Fahim took The Daily Morning Brunch into the captivating world of DrunkDeck, exploring the inspiration behind its creation, sharing memorable anecdotes from players, and gaining insights into his vision for the game. So, gather your friends, ready your glasses, and get ready for an unforgettable journey into the realm of DrunkDeck.
What inspired you to create the card game, and how did you come up with the idea for the specific challenges/tasks players face?
I was inspired to create DrunkDeck, an online drinking game, based on my own experiences playing various games with friends. We always had a blast, but I felt like something was missing. The challenges were kind of generic, and there was no efficient way to keep score and add a bit of friendly competition.
So, I went on a quest to make the ultimate online drinking game. I tried out different games, both drinking and non-drinking, and mixed them up to create something fresh and exciting. I wanted it to be perfect for any occasion, whether it’s a laid-back hangout or a crazy party.
Were there any particular design considerations you took into account to ensure the game would be enjoyable and engaging for a wide range of players?
When I designed DrunkDeck, my main focus was to create a game that’s enjoyable and engaging for everyone. So, I kept a few things in mind to keep it cool and fun.
First, I wanted the game to look clean and minimal. I didn’t want to overwhelm the players with too many colours and artworks. Less is more than enough.
I also wanted to keep things super simple to play. Each player takes a turn and draws a card with cool challenges or dares, like “Drink if you cried because of a terrible haircut” or “Drink if you have a piercing”. Oh, and I even added a special card just for Sri Lankan players to scream “Papadam” or take a sip for some extra laughs!
When a player completes a challenge, they can press “Done” and score a point. But hey, if they’re not feeling up to it, they can take a sip and press “Drank” to pass the turn.
Can you share any memorable moments or stories you’ve heard from players who have experienced the game? What are some of the most hilarious or outrageous challenges/tasks that have been encountered?
Plenty! I’ve heard and seen memorable moments. I’ve seen players hug five trees in 30 seconds, players just drinking for the sake of it, players who shouldn’t be doing handstands… doing handstands. I think the funniest moment was when I saw the pure joy that lit up the guys faces when the card read, “All guys must drink.”
Did you encounter any challenges or obstacles during the development or testing phase of the game? How did you overcome them to create a successful and entertaining product?
Of course! I didn’t expect DrunkDeck to increase in players quite fast to be very honest. It started slow of course but in 3-4 months I started seeing traffic increase from the US, Canada, and Australia. After a while, I started getting 15–20 games played every 30 minutes, which is huge for me.
There were times when the DrunkDeck website kept going down and crashing because of the amount of games being played. These challenges actually helped me understand and optimise DrunkDeck in a better way.
How do you envision the game enhancing social interactions among players? What atmosphere or dynamic do you hope it creates during parties or gatherings?
In today’s tech-driven world, parties can sometimes feel disconnected with everyone buried in their phones. It’s even more awkward when different friend groups come together. Because DrunkDeck is a free online game, it’s easy to smash through physical barriers. Whether you’re across town or across the globe, you and your friends can join in the fun. No more cringe-worthy moments, just epic social interactions and drunk players hugging five trees in under 30 seconds.
Do you have any more editions coming up? What can players expect in the future?
You bet! DrunkDeck V2 is almost done; it’s in the testing phase. It’s more than just a drinking game with cards now. There are a lot of good updates, and it also gives the player the ability to add their own cards, create their own virtual room, where players can team up and play against each other and so much more. I’m super excited about the next version! Looking forward to seeing you guys there. Also, very important; drink responsibly.
