Water levels in several major rivers and reservoirs are rising rapidly following heavy rainfall, the Irrigation Department has stated.

Around 150 mm of rain has been recorded in the upper catchments of the Kelani and Mahaweli rivers over the past 24 hours. The Mahaweli has reached major flood levels in Nawalapitiya.

Residents in Nawalapitiya, Peradeniya, Gampola, Kitulgala, Avissawella, Yatiyantota, Norwood, Ratnapura, Bulathsinhala and other low-lying areas have been urged to remain vigilant.

Water levels are also rising in the Nilwala, Gin, Kalu and Attanagalu rivers, with minor flooding reported in some areas. Authorities are closely monitoring the situation.
