Rear Admiral Dammika Kumara, Vice Chancellor of the General Sir John Kotelawala Defence University (KDU), has been recognised with the Order of Maritime Merit, awarded by France, in recognition of his contribution to the maritime sector and professional excellence.
The award was presented at the French Embassy in Colombo on 31 August 2026. Rear Admiral Kumar was nominated for the honour by the French Ambassador to Sri Lanka in recognition of his contribution to the advancement of maritime studies, regional maritime cooperation and the strengthening of maritime ties between France and Sri Lanka.
The Order of Maritime Merit was established in 1930 to recognise individuals who have made outstanding contributions to the development of the maritime sector and demonstrated professional expertise in the field.
Particular recognition was also given to his contribution, whilst serving as Vice Chancellor of KDU, to the establishment and development of the Regional Centre for Maritime Studies (RCMS). The centre was launched in 2024 as a joint initiative between Sri Lanka and France.
