The power of communication in a connected world

The power of communication in a connected world

05 Apr 2026 | By Ravihansi Palliyaguruge

“Communication works for those who work at it.”

This simple yet powerful quote reminds us that communication is not just something we do, it is something we build, shape, and continuously improve.

In today’s fast moving, digitally connected world, communication has become more important than ever before. We are constantly sending messages, reacting to posts, and engaging in conversations, yet the real question remains: are we truly communicating or just exchanging words?

From a young age, children should be exposed to public speaking through social events and school activities. Nowadays, many schools encourage students to participate in speaking events and Gavel Clubs. This helps mould their future. Parents should also encourage children and teenagers to join a Toastmasters or Gavel Club early, as it develops their confidence, communication skills, and overall personality.

On a global level, communication plays a vital role in shaping relationships between people and even countries. The way we speak, listen, and respond can either build bridges or create barriers.

Cultural differences also influence communication styles. What may be considered polite in one country might seem distant or too direct in another. This is why learning to communicate with awareness and sensitivity has become an essential skill, especially for young individuals aiming to step into international careers.

Public speaking helps a person grow by building confidence, improving communication skills, and teaching them to express ideas clearly. It encourages thinking, leadership, and courage to face audiences, ultimately shaping personality and opening opportunities in both personal and professional life.

This is where platforms like Toastmasters International, Model United Nations, and Gavel Clubs play a significant role. They create spaces where individuals can practice speaking, listening, and presenting their ideas with confidence. These platforms do not just teach public speaking, they shape personalities, improve leadership skills, and encourage individuals to express their thoughts with clarity and purpose. In a world where communication defines opportunities, such experiences become truly valuable.

Personally, I have been fortunate to experience the power of communication from a very young age. My teachers believed in me and gave me opportunities to speak at school assemblies, conduct English literary meetings, and participate in debates. Those small moments on stage built a foundation of confidence within me.

By Grade 12, I became part of my school’s Model United Nations, which opened my eyes to global discussions and the importance of expressing ideas with structure and confidence. Later, I joined Toastmasters to further improve my public speaking ability. It not only helped me become a better speaker but also allowed me to connect with inspiring individuals and build a strong network that continues to support my growth.

Communication is also deeply connected to emotions. Sometimes, the most meaningful conversations are not about speaking more, but about listening better. In relationships, friendships, and even professional settings, understanding the other person matters just as much as expressing ourselves. A kind word, a thoughtful response, or even a moment of silence can speak volumes.

In the end, communication is more than just a skill. It is a powerful tool that shapes our lives, builds our connections, and defines our place in the world. In a connected world where voices are everywhere, what truly matters is how we choose to use ours.
