Cabinet approves mandatory vessel tracking for 1,500 fishing boats

07 Jul 2026 | BY Staff Writer

The Cabinet has approved the mandatory installation of Vessel Monitoring Systems (VMS) on around 1,500 fishing vessels operating in Sri Lankan waters.

The government will bear the cost of installing the tracking systems.

The move aims to strengthen monitoring of fishing vessels and help prevent illegal fishing and other maritime crimes.

The proposal covers vessels registered before January 1, 2021 that are not already equipped with VMS devices.
