The Inland Revenue Department has announced that a valid Taxpayer Identification Number (TIN) Certificate will be mandatory for specified transactions from 1 November 2026.
The requirement will apply to transactions including opening bank or financial institution accounts, registering or renewing motor vehicle licences, registering land, registering a business and obtaining a credit card.
A TIN Certificate will also be required for building plan approvals and the transfer of shares in Sri Lankan companies.
The Department advised those who do not already have a TIN to obtain one through its e-Services platform.
