The Supreme Court has invalidated the Presidential pardon granted by former President Maithripala Sirisena to Jude Shramantha Jayamaha, the convict in the Royal Park murder case.
The Court ruled that Sirisena's pardon contravened constitutional provisions and ordered him to pay Rs. 1 million in compensation to the petitioner and Rs. 1 million each to the victim's parents.
The Attorney General has been instructed to pursue Jayamaha's extradition, as he is currently overseas.
This decision was delivered by Justices S. Thurairaja, Yasantha Kodagoda, and Janak de Silva following a petition by the Women and Media Collective.
