- A look at the Yaal Virindu – Jaffna Food Festival
The Yaal Virindu – Jaffna Food Festival returned to the heart of Colombo, presenting a delectable journey through the culinary treasures of Jaffna at Ramada Colombo from 12-15 October. The Daily Morning Brunch had the pleasure of dropping by to experience this culinary journey through Jaffna, and safe to say, we weren’t disappointed. With each bite, we discovered the rich history, vibrant culture, and authentic flavours that make Jaffna cuisine a true gem.
A feast for the senses
The festival’s atmosphere was nothing short of enchanting. Colourful decorations and traditional Jaffna art adorned the venue. The air was filled with the aroma of spices, and lively Tamil music provided a perfect backdrop for our culinary adventure. The energy was infectious, and it was evident that this was an event that celebrated not only food but also the community and culture it represents.
The array of dishes was staggering, but every bite offered a glimpse into the diverse and flavourful world of Jaffna cuisine. Here are some of the standout dishes that left a lasting impression.
A pol pittu fiesta
The pol pittu was a delightful mix of grated coconut and red rice served with a rich and fragrant crab curry and a heavenly gingelly prawn curry. Each element was distinct, yet they blended harmoniously, creating a symphony of flavours. The crab curry was a revelation, with the perfect balance of spices and a hint of coconut milk. It was a culinary masterpiece, and we found ourselves going back for seconds.
Kool – The hearty broth
Kool, a traditional Jaffna dish, was unlike anything we had tasted before. This hearty broth was a blend of vegetables, seafood, and herbs. The hotel had meat and vegetarian versions available for guests to try, and both were hits! It’s a testament to the ingenuity of Jaffna cuisine, where humble ingredients are transformed into a dish that is both flavourful and comforting. Each spoonful was a medley of flavours and textures, and we could see why Kool holds a special place in the hearts of many.
A sweet finale
As the evening progressed, we couldn’t resist indulging in some traditional Jaffna sweets. The payasam, a creamy and fragrant rice pudding, was a comforting and sweet embrace that transported us to the heart of Jaffna’s kitchens. It was the perfect balance of sweetness and subtle spices.
Next up were the laddu, bite-sized delights made of roasted gram flour and generously adorned with jaggery. Their nutty flavour and rich sweetness left a delightful impression on our taste buds, providing a contrast to the complex and savoury dishes that came before.
Fresh mango slices, a symbol of Jaffna’s tropical abundance, provided a refreshing palate cleanser. The juicy, sun-kissed fruit was the perfect conclusion to our culinary journey, a vibrant burst of natural sweetness that encapsulated the essence of Jaffna’s fertile land.
These desserts beautifully showcased the diverse range of flavours in Jaffna cuisine, transitioning us from the savoury to the sweet in a truly delicious manner. They added an enchanting and sweet note to the festival, leaving a lasting memory of the vibrant, multifaceted Jaffna cuisine.
Unforgettable moments
The festival wasn’t just about the food; it was also about the stories and connections it created. We had the pleasure of speaking to My Sister’s Kitchen Founders Thushara and Danu Innasithamby, who collaborated with Ramada Colombo for the food festival. They shared their passion for preserving Jaffna cuisine and the joy of seeing their dishes evoke nostalgia in guests. The festival brought together families and friends, sparking conversations about cherished family recipes and culinary traditions.
Ramada Colombo General Manager Wasim Cader’s words of wisdom resonated with us throughout the evening. He urged patrons not to overload their plates with an assortment of dishes but to make multiple trips to the buffet. The standard operating procedure (SOP), including the colour-coded tags, made the dining experience much more enjoyable. It allowed us to savour each dish individually and appreciate the nuances of Jaffna cuisine.
One remarkable aspect of the festival was the international appeal it held. Thushara shared stories of clients who had journeyed from Jaffna to Colombo, seeking the flavours of their childhood. The event had become a pilgrimage of sorts for those who longed to reconnect with their culinary heritage. It was heart-warming to witness the sense of belonging and nostalgia that the festival evoked in them.
The Yaal Virindu – Jaffna Food Festival at Ramada Colombo was more than a culinary event; it was a journey through history, tradition, and the vibrant culture of Jaffna. Each dish was a revelation, and the festival was a vibrant celebration of the flavours and stories that define Jaffna cuisine.
As we left the festival, our taste buds and heart were content. The festival had transported us to a world of spices, memories, and vibrant culture. It was a reminder of the power of food to bring people together and tell stories that span generations. We left with not just a satisfied appetite but also a deeper appreciation for the rich culinary heritage of Jaffna. The Yaal Virindu – Jaffna Food Festival had truly been a feast for the soul.
