Sri Lanka has signed the landmark United Nations Convention Against Cybercrime (UNCC) in Ha Noi, Viet Nam, joining 72 United Nations (UN) Member States and the European Union.

The convention, the first UN agreement of its kind, aims to foster international cooperation against cybercrime and establish a safer digital environment.

Waruna Sri Dhanapala, Acting Secretary of the Ministry of Digital Economy, signed the document on behalf of Sri Lanka, one of only two South Asian nations to sign.

Sri Lanka will now initiate an inter-Ministerial mechanism to prepare for ratification within three months.

Sri Lanka CERT is designated as the national focal point.
