Minister of Highways and Urban Development Bimal Rathnayake revealed that about 60% of passenger transport drivers in Colombo and suburbs are severely addicted to drugs.

Addressing a Kandy meeting, he highlighted that 2,700 accidents in 2025 caused 2,700 deaths, with drivers responsible for half of these incidents.

Mobile tests found 16% of inspected drivers under the influence, likely underestimating the true extent.

The Government plans stricter laws, including special licenses for trained drivers, and promises rehabilitation for offenders to improve road safety.
