Former Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad killed

01 Mar 2026 | BY Lahiru Doloswala

Unconfirmed reports circulating in several foreign media outlets claim that Mahmoud Ahmadinejad has been killed following what is described as an Israeli or American airstrike targeting his residence. As of now, Iranian authorities have not issued an official statement verifying the claim, and independent confirmation remains unavailable.

The reports suggest that the alleged strike hit a residential property associated with the former president.

However, details surrounding the incident, including the timing, the identity of those responsible, and the extent of casualties, remain unclear.

Ahmadinejad served as Iran’s president from 2005 to 2013 and was known internationally for his confrontational rhetoric toward the West and Israel, as well as his staunch defence of Iran’s nuclear programme.

Domestically, his tenure was marked by economic turbulence and political unrest, most notably during the disputed 2009 presidential election, which sparked widespread protests.

Although no longer at the centre of Iran’s executive leadership, Ahmadinejad remained a prominent political figure and continued to comment publicly on domestic governance and foreign policy matters.

Developments remain fluid, and further clarity is expected as official statements emerge.
