- Serving authentic Italian cuisine while serving everyone
Italian food is undoubtedly a fan favourite. From pizza to pasta dishes to deserts like tiramisu, Italian inspired food has filled our homes and hearts for decades. However, the struggle to find authentic Italian food is real.
This is why Dolce Italia enters the picture. Located in Colombo, Dolce Italia takes classic Italian dishes and turns it into memories. After hearing about their take on modern Italian cuisine, The Daily Morning Brunch visited the restaurant in order to experience the uniqueness of authentic Italian cuisine.
The ambience
While many restaurants make an effort to look aesthetic, Dolce Italia takes it a step further by their rustic outdoor seating area. The experience was complete with golden light strings and soft music, transporting us to a quiet cafe in Italy.
And for those of us who despise the heat, Dolce Italia has got us covered. The cafe also has a spacious air conditioned indoor area with a display of their products.
However, what struck us the most is the colourful Italian posters that gave the restaurant an old-world charm. The interior, along with the incredible ambiance, gave us the motivation to dig in and explore Italian cuisine,
The food
What we loved about Dolce Italia is its inclusivity. The restaurant not only caters to several dietary requirements but also has a vegan menu so those who follow a plant based diet feel included.
We tried and were amazed by the vegan ravioli with sage sauce and the vegan pasta al pomodoro.
The ravioli was filled with a generous amount of tofu and mushrooms making it both a tasty and healthy meal. What really impressed us was the sage, garlic and olive oil flavors that kept our pallets engaged.
The pasta al pomodoro was also one of our favourites. The tangy tomato flavor with the pasta is a classic that so many Italian restaurants struggle to get right.
Vegan Italian food, or vegan food in particular, is something that a lot of restaurants fail to cater to. This is why Dolce Italia is so high on our must visit list.
Vegan desserts
A standout aspect of the Dolce Italia experience is how the inclusivity extends seamlessly into the dessert menu. Too often, vegan diners are limited to fruit bowls or sorbets but this is not the case here.
One of the highlights was the vegan chocolate pizza. This dessert manages to be both playful and indulgent without feeling excessive. The base, lightly crisp on the outside and soft within, acted as the perfect base for a rich vegan chocolate spread. What stood out was the balance;the sweetness was present but not overpowering, allowing the texture and depth of the chocolate to come through. It is a dessert that feels familiar yet distinct, making it a perfect end to a good meal.
We also tried the fresh fruit served with vegan chocolate ganache. This dish leaned into simplicity, letting the quality of the ingredients speak for themselves. The fruit was fresh and both sweet and acidic , providing a contrast to the smooth, slightly bitter ganache. The combination worked well, offering a lighter option for those who prefer something less rich after a full meal.
What makes these desserts noteworthy is not just their taste but the intention behind them. They are not included as an afterthought but are clearly designed to stand alongside the rest of the menu and be inclusive to those following a plant based diet. This approach reinforces Dolce Italia’s commitment to making sure that vegan diners have just as much variety and choice.
The drinks
To complement the meal, Dolce Italia offers a selection of beverages that align well with its menu. From classic Italian-style coffees to refreshing coolers, the options are curated to suit different preferences.
The coffee, in particular, deserves mention. Whether paired with dessert or enjoyed on its own, it maintains the strong, rich profile expected from Italian-style brews. It works especially well with desserts like tiramisu or the vegan chocolate pizza, cutting through the sweetness and enhancing the overall experience.
For those looking for non-caffeinated options, the cooler selection provides a refreshing alternative. These drinks are simple and effective, providing an escape from the heat.
Portion sizes and value
Another aspect worth noting is the portion sizes. The dishes we tried were large, allowing us to not only feel full but made us feel comfortable with eating and enjoying ourselves.
The meals were both delicious and filling and we can definitely say that the restaurant provides a valuable experience.
Consistency and execution
Consistency is often where many restaurants struggle, especially when offering a diverse menu that includes both traditional and vegan options. However, Dolce Italia appears to maintain a steady level of execution across its dishes. The flavours are clear and well-defined and there is a noticeable effort to stay true to Italian cooking techniques while adapting to modern dietary needs. This balance is not easy to achieve but it is handled well here.
The vegan dishes, in particular, do not feel like substitutes. Instead, they are presented as complete dishes in their own right. This distinction is important, as it shifts the perception of vegan food from being restrictive to being equally enjoyable.
The overall experience
What ties everything together at Dolce Italia is the sense of thoughtfulness. From the ambience to the menu to the service, there is a consistent effort to create a space that feels both authentic and accessible.
The restaurant does not rely solely on aesthetics or trends. Instead, it focuses on delivering a cohesive experience where each element supports the other. The result is a dining environment that feels intentional rather than performative.
Inclusivity, in this context, is not treated as a marketing point but as a core part of the restaurant’s identity. This is evident in the way the menu is structured and how the staff engage with customers.
Dolce Italia successfully bridges the gap between authenticity and inclusivity. It offers Italian cuisine that respects tradition while adapting to contemporary dietary preferences in a meaningful way.
The addition of well-executed vegan dishes, including desserts like the chocolate pizza and fruit with ganache, sets it apart from many other restaurants in Colombo. These options are not only available but are given equal importance, ensuring that all diners can enjoy a complete meal.
