Navy rescues injured fisherman off southern coast

29 May 2026 | By Staff Writer

The Sri Lanka Navy assisted in bringing an injured fisherman ashore for urgent medical treatment yesterday (28), following a rescue operation coordinated by the Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC) Colombo.

The fisherman was among six crew members aboard a multi-day fishing trawler that had departed from Kudawella Fisheries Harbour on 5 May. While fishing about 730 nautical miles off Sri Lanka’s southern coast, he sustained an injury and required immediate medical assistance.

Following a request received by MRCC Colombo, the nearby merchant vessel Dong Fang Wei Ye was directed to retrieve the injured fisherman.

The Navy then deployed a vessel from the Southern Naval Command to meet the merchant ship and transfer the patient. Naval personnel provided first aid before transporting him to Galle Harbour.

The injured fisherman was subsequently admitted to the National Hospital in Galle for further treatment.

The Navy stated that it remains prepared to respond to maritime emergencies in coordination with MRCC Colombo.
